This Masters thesis seeks to understand the innovation processes of grassroots innovators in two states in Southern India. Through interviews and case study research, the thesis sheds light on how each innovator has developed his innovation from idea to product, as well as on the enabling conditions that are needed in order to support processes of local innovation in Southern India.

This report presents the research of IDIN Summer Research Fellow Rida Qadri, who traveled to Lahore, Pakistan during the summer of 2015 to conduct exploratory research on the impact of an innovative agricultural crop residue-to-energy project in rural Punjab. This report present preliminary findings of her analysis of the economic benefits that this project generated throughout its rural supply chain.
This is an early draft of a working paper co-developed by members of the Lean Research initiative at the Tufts Fletcher School, the Feinstein International Center, and MIT D-Lab. We are distributing this initial version to stimulate dialogue on this topic among researchers, practitoners, policymakers, funders, and students conducting research in the contexts of international development and humanitarian work.
