Sook Sisaket Local Health Club Initiative, IDDS Sisaket

IDDS participants and community members designed a series of simple exercises for villagers emphasizing adults. They created basic exercise equipment using local bamboo to supplement the exercises. Their project was rapidly taken up by local villagers who had wanted to establish similar initiatives, working with the team to establish a health club who meets daily to lead each other in different exercises. This is particularly useful since diabetes and hypertension are common health problems for villagers, but there are few health promotion strategies currently being implemented.

Local Waste Management Promotion, IDDS Sisaket

IDDS participants and community members focused on promoting tetra-packs, an easy to clean, high use product in an effort to physically reduce trash that would otherwise be burned, reimagine waste, and create items that can be used for play by children.

Organic Methods for Apple Snail Management, IDDS Sisaket

IDDS participants and community partners collaborated with local farmers to understand their problems and find effective ways to reduce the invasive snail population and destruction of young shoots by juvenile snails. They designed an integrated duck farming system for rice growers. Ducks are introduced to control snails, weeds, and other pests. Duckweed is introduced to provide supplemental feed and nutrition to the ducks, reduce weeds, and provide nitrogen to the rice plants. Ducks can then be sold at the end of each season.

PLEARN: Game Based English Learning, IDDS Sisaket

IDDS participants and community members developed a game-based learning approach that strives to help teachers help students to enjoy learning English vocabulary in a fun and practical way. The team identified the project as easily implementable by teachers, reproducible, and complementary to existing practices.

Quemador para Tuj: Clean Room Heating and LED Advocacy, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community partners developed an alternative system for heating the temezcal, a traditional sauna-like structure that is used for bathing in Santa Catarina. Previously heated solely through open flame, which contain smoke that can be dangerous and irritating to lungs and eyes.

Additionally, this team of participants created an educational campaign promoting the use of LED lightbulbs, since although they are initially more expensive they result in lower monthly bills. This report is in Spanish.

Ecosan: Separating Waste to Create Fertilizer, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community partners developed a latrine that separates liquid and solid waste. This way, the solid waste can potentially be used as fertilizer. The design also includes a water catchment system that collects rainfall for hand washing in an enclosed container. Properly sorting and managing the waste can reduce contamination of local water sources and household land. This report is in Spanish.

Nim'Ya: Water Catchment and Storage System, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community partners developed a water catchment and storage system that attaches to the roof of any home. Rainwater is filtered before entering a large storage system. The water can then be extracted from the container through a faucet without leaving the container open. This report is in Spanish.

Natz'Uk: Recycling Plastic Bags into Solid Panels, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community members designed a metal mold that can be filled with cut strips of plastic bags that can then be placed next to a stove so the plastic can melt intosturdy panels. These can be connected to create furniture, amongst a variety of other uses. It is easy to use and includes instructions for making use of your household plastics. This report is in Spanish.

Ciclo Rotatorio: Compost Generating Barrel Mechanism, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community partners developed a rotating barrel fit with a drainage system that is ideal for creating compost. There are also future plans to create seperate compartments that allow for multiple batches of compost to be created at once. Huertos Familiares: Vertical Community Gardens, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

IDDS participants and community members designed vertical gardens that can be hung in a variety of locations. Growing nutritious and useful foods, families can increase their nutrient intake while easily growing from the comfort of their home. Educational cards are included with helpful information on sustaining the plants. This report is in Spanish.
