Learning to Adapt: A Case Study of a Climate Change Pilot Project in Shaanxi, China

This report and case study presents the research of IDIN 2016 Summer Research Fellow Jessica Gordon, who researched an innovative poverty alleviation and climate adaptation pilot project in a village in rural western China.  The case study finds that the project was effective in influencing the local development plan for the area to take into consideration climate change adaptation and mitigation and to link these issues to poverty reduction, making this the first county in China to develop a climate resilient local development plan.

EZ NCORO Human-Powered Washing Machine Report, IDDS Botswana

The Ez Ncoro Team built a simple, low-cost, human-powered washing machine with the aim of reducing the time and effort required to wash clothes and conserving water, a precious commodity for the D’kar residents. With such a product, the D’kar community, especially the women (who are culturally assigned the role of washing clothes) can use their extra time towards rearing their families or running businesses.

C’EEKG’AM Sustainable Tea Maker Report, IDDS Botswana

Tea and fire are two important aspects of the D’kar culture. However, firewood is a scarce commodity and can be very difficult to find. Given this context, the Ceekg’am team created two prototypes. They first created fuel briquettes from agricultural waste (maize and donkey waste) that is more commonly found in the area. Secondly, they built a stove that will use the alternative fuel (briquettes) and firewood to efficiently boil small quantities of water throughout the day, providing households with a more sustainable fuel source for their tea and family fires.

Autonomous Network Report, IDDS Amazon

Participants at IDDS Amazon worked to bring quality internet service to the community while respecting local practices. This project included a prototyped bamboo tower to receive the internet signal, a cluster consisting of the first group of houses to receive internet service, and network management plan and a business roadmap on how to use collective decision making to guide next steps in providing internet to the wider community.

Palm kernel shells are produced as waste from palm oil and are utilized by blacksmiths after they have been charred to burn off the remaining oils in them. This KNUST student thesis analyzes the calorific value of palm kernel shells used during this process.
